“It’s the best floss I have ever used.” — Veronica C.

The ultimate floss.

We spent hundreds of hours researching and testing. And after trying everything from oral picks (tons of plastic waste, bulky, expensive) to silk floss (breaks, just "ok" at removing plaque and bacteria) —plus dozens of different floss brands, and various tools all designed to remove bacteria in between teeth and gums areas, we moved to create our advanced floss and Refillable Floss System™.

Why not optimize floss to go beyond its first job of effectively removing plaque, and also infuse it with ingredients beneficial to oral health? Doing so was far more complicated than we anticipated, and we worked with our dental and health advisors through the details of each component. After a lot of pushing, prodding and troubleshooting, Infused Black Floss was born.

Why not drastically cut waste and make it refillable? Our Refillable Floss System™ does that. When empty, simply pop open the case and insert a new bobbin — this simple step reduces waste by more than 70% over traditional flosses.

Why not utilize advanced thread technology? Our floss uses an advanced multifilament thread technology utilizing  500+ filaments in each strand, each thinner than a human hair. The thread actually expands to grab extra gunk from in between each tooth and pull out more of the bad stuff. The deep black color also acts as a barometer for the amount of leftover food and plaque you are extracting.

70% less waste with our Refillable Floss System™

  • We’ve heard that if everyone on our planet flossed 1x a day, the plastic containers disposed in a single year could fill a football stadium 6 stories high.
  • Our plastic container can be refilled countless times. After crunching the numbers, the reduction of plastic waste by using our refills and the original casing could be cut by 70%.
  • Subscribing to our refill spool of floss not only has an environmental benefit, but it will help remind you to keep up with your beneficial floss routine.

How to use:

  1. We recommend flossing with a 16” length of floss per use.
  2. When empty, prop the case open, remove the old spool’s plastic ring and replace with a refill spool.

Please note: When swapping out spools, if the metal part (used to cut the floss) comes loose, just slide it back into position. Open the container over a flat surface (e.g. not your sink!) to avoid losing this piece.

Infusion: Fulvic Acid, Clove, Tea Tree and Ceylon Cinnamon Essential Oils, Beeswax. Floss: Polyester microfiber. Refill Case: Polypropylene Weight: Case & floss: 17 grams, Spool floss refill: 6 grams

What’s not included
? Chemicals or coatings typically found in many flosses. E.g Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) (added for the “glide factor”) which are linked to thyroid disease, dementia, cancer, fertility issues, and birth defects. Read more about PFCs here.

Tips:

How to establish a flossing routine?

  1. Do it at the same time, every day.
  2. Miss a day (or several)? just floss at your next designated time. Don’t beat yourself up.
  3. Make a visual reminder. Keep your floss on your bathroom sink, in your purse, or car console.
  4. Don’t run out. Just like a core supplement, this good habit can die if you run out. (Consider subscribing to our spool refill as a reminder for yourself —“Its gonna keep coming and I want to do this daily.”)
  5. Remind yourself while flossing that you are removing bacteria that a) contributes to bad breath, and b) could lead to systemic diseases like heart disease, Alzheimer's, etc.

Haven’t flossed in a while? Like with our Tongue Cleaner, use the appearance (and odor) of what you remove as inspiration to keep it up. Yep, we know it sounds gross, however, it provides inspiration to make flossing part of your daily oral hygiene routine!

"Most people do not now know that it is necessary to use dental floss." — Dr. Charles Bass (regarded by many as the father of holistic dentistry)

Did you know?

  • Flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque, as recommended by the American Dental Association.
  • By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chances of keeping your teeth for a lifetime and decrease your chance of having periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay.
  • Poor oral health and gum disease can be linked to several ailments, such as endocarditis, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, premature birth, and many other health conditions.
  • An estimated 300-500 species of bacteria live inside our mouths and can be found in plaque. While some are beneficial, most are not. Look under the microscope.

Flossing FAQs

As recommended by the American Dental Association:

  • When’s the best time to floss?
The ADA recommends brushing twice a day and cleaning between the teeth with floss (or another interdental cleaner) once a day. Some people prefer to floss in the evening before bedtime so that the mouth is clean while sleeping. Others prefer to floss after their midday meal. Still, others chose to floss first thing as a part of their morning ritual. The bottom line is that best time to floss is the time that fits well with the individual’s schedule.
  • Should I brush or floss first?
According to ADA, either is acceptable as long as you do a thorough job. Some people like to floss before brushing to better ensure that any material between teeth is swept out of the mouth. Others prefer to first clean their mouth by brushing before working with floss between their teeth.
  • Can I rinse and reuse floss?
The ADA does not recommend using a floss strand more than once. Used floss might fray, lose its effectiveness, or may deposit bacteria in the mouth. Discard after use.

How important is flossing? Many dentists believe that if you can only do one thing each day, flossing is more important than brushing your teeth.

Worth the wait! Best floss I have ever used! I floss after every meal. It expands too fill the uneven spaces, really cleans without the uncomfortable cutting feeling. I have some deep pockets between some teeth, and it worked without discomfort. Love Akamai products, value and message!!!

Amazing Floss

I just got my floss yesterday and love it! I am due for a filling and had a toothache. I used the floss, mouthwash and toothpaste last night and my mouth feels calm and clean. No ache! There is no other way to describe it. It’s like a spa in your mouth. I’m definitely sharing this with my dentist.

Digging it.

Felt like normal floss, but knowing that it’s better for my teeth than regular floss it helps encourage me flossing more. I like that you can barely taste it.

Shocked - needed this badly.

I was shocked when I discovered how badly I needed it and how well it got the job done. Afterwards I felt clean and healthy. The subtle taste acts as a reminder to the infused fulvic acid, minerals, and essential oils that make the floss unique and deeply cleansing. It makes me want to floss more!

Can’t rave enough!

I have a confession - I barely flossed before I used Akamai’s Infused Floss. Now, after seeing (and smelling! OY!) the junk that comes from this simple black strand, I am terrified to go a single day without flossing. Love that it’s infused with the good stuff, and none of the scary chemicals of the slick flosses. PS - My 2 year old son LOVES it too.

Definite reminder to floss more

I liked that you could see what came out of your teeth on the black floss. To me, this served as a reminder to floss more and showed how much we miss when brushing alone! I also enjoyed that it didn’t have a strong taste. Didn’t love that it’s in plastic but the fact that it is a refillable system is what matters most.

Hands down, best floss I’ve ever used.

Love the concept of the refillable system. Brilliant simplicity there. I think the floss itself is really good. I am actually looking forward to flossing — it seems to slide between the teeth really well and appreciate being black —you can see what is getting removed. Couldn’t really taste the essential oils and the FMC didn’t have a flavor— but this is minor for me. Knowing — and seeing — 40% more of the bad stuff getting removed is enough for me. This is what counts!
