Using a dry brush gives new meaning to the idea of “clean, healthy skin”.....in fact, it means so much more to our overall health.

When we first came across a dry brush we immediately thought it was just a good tool for exfoliating dead skin -- which it is. Digging deeper we learned about its importance in stimulating and assisting the lymphatic system, not only to assist in detoxification but for transporting white blood cells (infection fighters) throughout the body (improved immunity). Similar to massage as a tool for overall well being — addressing not only aches and pains, general relaxation, increased blood flow, and lymphatic drainage, dry brushing is another essential, tool with multiple benefits. Healthy is beautiful.

Dry brushing can be a major player in your skin and overall health. Here’s why:

In addition to systemic support, exfoliated, detoxified, clean and healthy skin looks better. Dry brushing cleans the skin by unclogging pores, removing debris and dead skin cells allowing your natural oils to return, and any added oils (like Skin Fuel) and nutrients to be absorbed. In fact, if your skin is not well exfoliated (aka lizard skin) oil and moisture won’t penetrate it. Ever notice oil or lotion you apply just sitting on top of the skin and not sinking in? Time to exfoliate.

Our skin does more than just protect us. Think about it — it’s our largest organ and vital to our overall health. As the exterior “shield” for our bodies, it protects and defends us from a host of microbial pathogens, dehydration, UV exposure, and extreme temperatures. It also absorbs moisture and nutrients sending them directly to our bloodstream. It even creates Vitamin D from sun exposure, which is critical to a wide range of vital functions. It provides a major pathway for eliminating toxins from our bodies - it is sometimes referred to as the 3rd Kidney. Eczema? Psoriasis? A rash? Weird growth? If something is wrong, your skin will probably tell you - it is the first to show signs of an imbalance, allergy, toxin, or a deficiency. Paying attention to the health of your skin is critical in understanding what might be happening at a deeper level while making sure the exterior is exfoliated, hydrated, and protected.

Our immune system’s super-highway — the lymphatic system. It sits right below our skin and runs throughout our bodies. Just like our skin, liver, kidney, colon, and respiratory system, the lymphatic system plays a major role in the detoxification of the body. Approximately two liters of lymph fluid circulates through the lymphatic vessels that cover the body literally from head to toe. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph fluid, which contains infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. A sluggish lymphatic system can cause a build-up of toxins which can lead to poor health.

How to use

  1. Starting at your feet use 3-4 long, sweeping strokes on each area as you work your way up your legs.
  2. When you hit your midsection, move onto your hands and up to your shoulders then hit your midsection, chest, and neck.
  3. Shower or bathe to wash away dead skin & impurities.
  4. Apply a high-quality, plant-based body oil while skin is still damp to nourish your skin and seal in moisture.

A couple of basics

  • Always brush towards the heart (this is the way our lymphatic system flows)
  • Dry brush in the bathtub or shower
  • The process takes 2-4 minutes

Keep in mind

  • Dry brushing is best done before bathing with dry skin that is free from lotion or oil. Makes a great morning routine since it stimulates your system.
  • Remember to be gentle — vary the pressure depending on the area of the body. As a guideline, if it feels good, continue, if it not, just avoid the area completely. The brush may be too rough for your face - use your judgment.

Tips

  • Don’t forget to moisturize after dry brushing - Along with dead skin, Dry Brushing (exfoliating) removes our body's natural oils. The skin needs its oil replenished. Keep in mind, lotions are mostly water with a small % of oil (and contain preservatives that are bad for the biome).
  • Like a toothbrush, a dry brush should be replaced when you see signs of wear. Bristles eventually start to relax (or bend over time). depending on the usage every 6 months to 12 months.
  • For proper care and longevity: 1. Store your brush outside of the shower and away from moisture. 2. Wash your brush every week with a gentle, natural soap (like our 3 in 1 Bar). A mixture of baking soda and water works well too.
  • Try a hot and cold shower following your dry brushing session. Known as balneotherapy, or hydrotherapy, it has been shown to boost your immune system and “rev” your circulatory system. - in fact, this ancient technique has proven, beneficial effects on your entire body.
  • Don’t forget the armpits when you dry brush! There are lots of lymph nodes there (axillary nodes) that greatly benefit from stimulation/detoxifying. In fact, the armpits and groin have the greatest concentration of lymph nodes.

Q: How often should I clean the brush and how do I clean it?

A: We recommend washing your brush every week with a gentle, natural soap (like our 3 in 1 Bar). A mixture of baking soda and water works well too.

My dry brush routine with Akamai!

If anyone's shower takes a while to heat up like mine, here's my trick to all the waiting: Turn on your shower, and in the time it takes to move from cold to hot — dry brush! Truly that simple. It usually takes about 1-2 minutes for my water heater, and in that span, I can dry brush effectively from head to toe. Then, immediately after my shower (with my skin still wet) I use Skin Fuel all over, and the cycle is complete! My skin has gone from bumpy and dull to radiant, smooth, and hydrated. It's the EASIEST, healthiest, chemical-free routine and has saved my skin! Thank you, Akamai!
