Our toothbrush delivers superior oral care, simplicity, and sustainability.

True to the revolutionary 1948 design by Dr. Charles C Bass, seen by many as the father of preventive dentistry. Designed for a healthier mouth & planet. Set of 2.

Why we feel this is the best toothbrush on the market...

  • Fewer bristles & intelligent layout improves cleaning under the gumline.
  • Designed for precise fingertip control & sensitivity.
  • Slender design cuts waste by 25% compared to typical bamboo brushes.
  • Made of bamboo: biodegradable, naturally antibacterial, and durable.
  • A simple, smart way to cut plastic waste.
  • Head snaps off for added sustainability - just compost the handle.
  • Dupont Tynex® Soft Nylon Bristles. The best bristles made. Polished and rounded so they are gentle on gums.
  • Set of 2 (soft bristles).

Designed in the USA | Made in China | Fair Labor & Fair Wages | ISO 90001 quality certification

Our Dr. Bass-inspired Toothbrush features a bristle layout designed to reach under the gums and the smaller handle allows for more gentle precision. A key to preventing and controlling gum disease is brushing around and under the gum line where bacteria and plaque accumulate.

Unlike most toothbrushes, our toothbrush encourages a light touch. Its shorter handle is designed to be held by just a few fingers vs a fist. Subtle, but important. And with an intentional design of fewer bristles — ours has 192 bristles vs the hundreds (sometimes thousands) found in typical brushes — it is far more effective at cleaning under the gumline.

Fingertip control encourages a lighter touch and offers greater precision. This makes it easier to direct the toothbrush head throughout your mouth and along the gumline where many oral health issues occur if not properly cared for.

Designed to work with The Bass Method

Way back in the 1940’s Dr. Charles C. Bass developed a simple yet highly effective method for brushing teeth referred to as “The Bass Method.” To this day it is viewed by most dentists as the best method for effectively brushing teeth and optimal oral health.

How to use

  1. Brush gently at a 45-degree angle using a light circular motion, paying close attention to getting under the gum line. This is known as The Bass Method — for a good video see here.

Note: While we are not fans of Colgate, this is nonetheless the best video we found — to see the video make sure to select “I am a dental professional”

Tips

  • Unlike ordinary toothbrushes, ours encourages a light touch. Its shorter handle is designed to be held by just a few fingers vs a fist. Using fingertips allows for greater precision and a lighter touch (brushing with a fist with force can lead to receding gums).
  • Sharing a bathroom with other Akamai users? A simple way to avoid confusion is to put initials at the base of each handle with a permanent marker.
  • After approx. 3 months you can snap off the head and compost the handle. The score near the base of the head makes it easy to snap off the head. Toss the head. Compost the handle. (Have trouble snapping off the head? Try using the edge of a counter for leverage.)

Q: Is there an optimal technique to use your toothbrush most effectively?

A: Our bamboo toothbrush is made to be used with the Bass Method (or Modified Bass Technique). It's designed to get under the gumline and help you brush using a gentle, light touch - its shorter handle is designed to be held by just a few fingers (index and next finger plus thumb) vs a fist. Harsh brushing causes all kinds of issues, from gum recession to the possibility of damaging your enamel.

Q: How do I use the Bass Method?

A: Brush gently at a 45-degree angle paying close attention to getting under the gumline. A good video to learn this proven, simple technique can be found here. (Note: while we are not fans of Colgate, this is nonetheless the best video we found - to see the video make sure to select “I am a dental professional”).

I really enjoy this product and in fact, it is now the only toothbrush that I will use.

Just right.

The bamboo toothbrush is just right in size, the bristles are perfectly separated to allow cleaning in between teeth and crevices and it is really sturdy, but soft in the bristles.

Trouble with the feel of the raw bamboo in my mouth

I like that the tooth brush is very soft and promotes less vigorous brushing. I have a very hard time with the feel of the raw bamboo wood in my mouth. I wish it had a smooth finish. Love the tooth powder and floss. My teeth feel cleaner than they have in a while.

Dental floss and bamboo toothbrush

I’ve been using my new toothbrush and black floss for at least a month now. I will never go back to those regular plastic toothbrushes again. The bamboo toothbrush bristles reach in between the teeth and all the back teeth for me . My teeth have never felt so clean. The the thickness of the black floss allows me to really clean my gum line and between my teeth. Using these products together at least twice a day if not more has resulted in my gums no longer bleeding when brushing and flossing. I look forward to hearing what my dentist has to say at my next appointment. I’m on board with products that reduce plastic in our environment. I highly recommend these products!

Bought a second and a third and for gifts

The bamboo toothbrush is great. I am on my second one. I found the rectangular shape was a little larger than what I’d used prior but it didn’t take long to adjust to. I think the combination of the bamboo brush and tooth powder (I used the toothpaste for several years before the powder) and find that my teeth and mouth feel so clean and my hygienist tells me each time how good my oral care is and says “ just keep doing what you’re doing.” Thanks Akamai

Sweet Toothbrush

After six months of using Akamai's bamboo toothbrush, I had a dental visit. The hygienist barely scraped my teeth saying I was doing a wonderful job. I was thrilled. The Akamai toothbrush is considerably smaller than the average toothbrush and has a small head with only three rows of bristles. It took me a bit to get used to it and I wasn't sure if it would clean my teeth well, so this was a nice experiment. It is easy to get the brush thoroughly around the teeth and behind the back molars. It also gets under the gums but I feel I have to be conscious about how I brush. I've always had great dental reports so getting my teeth clean was never an issue, I just want to support cleaner health products and I absolutely hate the full-on synthetic/plastic brushes. Now that I know the Akamai brush will do as good or a better job, I'm not going to buy anything else. You get two toothbrushes in one package. I have one brush in each bathroom. No signs of wearing down so I think they might last me a year. The toothpaste is pretty good too but that's a separate review :D
