The not so good ingredients found in natural toothpastes

The not so good ingredients found in natural toothpastes

We’ve been led to believe toothpastes that are marketed as “clean, natural and non-toxic ” are healthy and good for us. However, due to widespread greenwashing and healthwashing, you'll discover most are not.Every ingredient in natural toothpaste should have real benefits with no downsides — and the stakes are high since a healthy mouth is critical to overall health and well-being.

How to remineralize teeth naturally

Your body has a natural process for remineralizing your teeth to keep them strong and healthy. The process of remineralization and the amount of time it takes is dependent on many factors: 1) the status of your PH/level of acidity and decay, 2) nutrient status of macro and trace minerals along with key vitamins, 3) your overall health, 4) the oral care products you use, 5) saliva production, 6) balanced oral microbiome.

Fluoride — Important news you may have missed.

Many of you have probably heard about the big federal lawsuit involving fluoride. There has been a nearly decade-long legal battle between the Fluoride Action Network, Food and Water Watch, Organic Consumers Association, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Hydroxyapatite for remineralizing teeth — has it been proven safe? [Updated June 2023]

There is a surge of new toothpastes and toothpowders on the market that promote the use of Hydroxyapatite (HAP) or Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) as the latest and greatest remineralizer and enamelizer. But what is it? And is it safe? Bottom Line: Synthetic nano hydroxyapatite (nHAP) has not been proven safe. Natural HAP is safe. Neither form has been proven to work better than other natural sources, like clay. See our update blog after careful review of the European Union's SCCS revised "Final Opinion"
Is Fulvic Acid the missing link to cellular health?

Is Fulvic Acid the missing link to cellular health?

Fulvic Acid is one of nature’s miracle molecules. It is a powerful electrolyte, natural antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antioxidant, that, due to its small size, enhances nutrient absorption and can even cross the blood brain barrier. It is full of naturally occurring nutrients including ionic macro & trace minerals, amino acids, organic acids and vitamins. But, did you know that fulvic acid is also incredibly high in molecular oxygen, hydrogen and carbon?
Mythbusting: Naturally derived ingredients are NOT natural

Mythbusting: Naturally derived ingredients are NOT natural

Natural brands rely HEAVILY on naturally derived ingredients — however these are not actually natural since they require a chemist, lab and a good amount of processing (and chemicals) to break apart and create.Brands do this to make it seem like their brand is “natural” and uses natural ingredients.

Why we're not EWG certified

While we started the certification process with EWG, they would not accept Calcium Montmorillonite Bentonite Clay, a key ingredient in our Mineral Toothpowder. Like many fruits and vegetables, bentonite clay contains minute, trace amounts of naturally occurring heavy metals.

Why being an outsider is good. Meet the founders.

We’re fans of the Socratic method of inquiry whereby you gain understanding by asking questions — here are a few we’ve answered to help you get to know us a little better. (Thanks to Tim Ferris for a few of the questions we borrowed from his book Tribe of Mentors).
How do I refill my Glass Refillable Floss Container?

How do I refill my Glass Refillable Floss Container?

Here are the steps: Unscrew the cap. Remove the separate steel cutting cap from the jar and set it aside. Find the inside (center) end of the floss on the spool and pull out a few inches.  ⚠️ Do not use the outer end of the floss — it must feed from the center. Drop the floss spool into the container with the inside center-pulled end hanging out the top. Reattach the metal cutting cap, threading the floss through the  through the small side slit (it is slightly rounded).| Do not use the opening underneath the cutter — that’s not meant for threading. Pull out a length of floss and cut using the cutter. You're ready to floss! _________________________________________________________________________________ Important Notes DO NOT feed the floss from the outside of the spool through the cutting cap. This will cause jams and prevent smooth dispensing. There are two ends to a floss spool: The outside end wraps around the outside of the roll and must remain tucked at the bottom. The inside (center) end feeds from the middle — this is the end you want to pull through the cap.

How do I refill my Stainless Steel Refillable Floss Container?

Here are the steps: Unscrew cap Pull ~3” of floss from the spool Drop spool into container Feed floss through hole in the cap Screw the cap back on & floss Important Note: use the floss end from the CENTER of the spool, not the end on the OUTSIDE. What should I do if the cap's metal cutter gets bent or flattened out?  Stainless steel is very strong. If your container gets banged up (e.g. from getting stuffed in a travel bag) there's a possibility the top flap could get bent down (it is small after all). If it’s no longer elevated enough for a clean cut, you can easily fix it. Either unscrew the top and gently push it back out using tweezers or a small metal tool, or carefully pry it upward from the top, just a tiny bit.

Floss FAQs

Q: Which floss is best for tight teeth? A: If your teeth have very tight spacing, our Infused Silk Floss is your best option. It’s thinner and designed to glide smoothly between even the closest contacts. Our Black Infused Floss is great for most people—it expands while flossing to grab more plaque—but if you have very tight teeth, it may feel too thick. If you have both tight and less tight spacing you could choose to use both versions. Simply use two dispensers — use the Infused Silk Floss spool in one, and the Infused Black Floss spool in the other. Q: Why should I floss daily? A: According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque. By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chances of keeping your teeth for a lifetime. Q: How do you use the refill system? Unscrew cap Pull ~3” of floss from the spool Drop spool into container  Feed floss through hole in the cap Screw the cap back on & floss Q: What if the spool doesn't fit? A: Our goal is to always make things “as simple as possible but no simpler”. While we initially resisted adding another kind of floss, two reasons compelled us. Reason #1:  We listened and responded — we got enough feedback from people with really tight spacing between their teeth that our Infused Black Floss was too thick for them. Akamai Infused Silk Floss is thinner while still being very strong. Reason #2: Adding Silk Floss enables us to offer a 100% plastic-free option. Combined with our Stainless Steel Container — it is about as sustainable and environmentally friendly as you can get when it comes to floss.  Both are infused with certified organic essential oils, ethical beeswax & Fulvic Acid to support oral health. Q: What if the small metal part (floss cutter) comes loose? A: Stainless steel is very strong. If your container gets banged up (e.g. from getting stuffed in a travel bag) there's a possibility the top flap could get bent down (it is small after all). If it’s no longer elevated enough for a clean cut, you can easily fix it. Either unscrew the top and gently push it back out using tweezers or a small metal tool, or carefully pry it upward from the top — just a tiny bit.
